State of emergency declared in Santorini: Patrols for looters also begin

The Greek Civil Protection General Secretariat has declared a state of emergency in Santorini until March 1. Police in Santorini, which was abandoned due to earthquake fears, took precautions against looting.

A state of emergency has been declared in the municipality of Thira in the Cyclades due to intense seismic activity in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos. The decision of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection specifically included the following statements: “In order to meet the urgent needs and manage the consequences of the recent seismic activity in the above region, we decide to declare a State of Emergency for Civil Protection in the Municipality of Thira. This declaration will come into force as of February 1 and will last for one month, until March 1.”

Greece is preparing for a major earthquake, especially in Santorini and the surrounding islands. Local authorities are taking protective measures on the island, where successive tremors continue. The Municipality of Santorini has placed strips in various places along the Caldera. It was stated that this measure was taken to prevent tourists and local residents from approaching certain points at risk of landslides due to strong winds and tremors. It is emphasized that more than 10 thousand people have left the island in recent days. THE LARGEST TREAK RECORDED A new earthquake measuring 5.2 occurred last night. This was recorded as the biggest tremor the region has experienced in recent days.

Experts say that the magnitude of the tremors is increasing and that this is important, and that the most critical question is whether the earthquakes will lead to a volcanic eruption.
