The president of the Valencian autonomous government in the east of the country, Carlos Mazon, said that there were deaths in some districts as a result of floods and inundations.
“Lifeless bodies were found at some points that were reached and other bodies continue to be found. We will not give any more information out of respect for the families,” Mazon said, announcing that the region’s biggest disaster since 1996 due to heavy rains had occurred. THE SPANISH PRESS REPORTED THAT SEVEN PEOPLE WERE MISSING The Spanish press reported that one person was missing in Valencia and six people were missing in Albacete as a result of floods and inundations. It was shared that adverse weather conditions caused extensive damage in the eastern and southern regions, where more than 200 liters of rain per square meter fell, agricultural areas were flooded, hundreds of vehicles were damaged, trees fell, roads and bridges collapsed, and serious disruptions were experienced in land and rail transportation. The Spanish government announced that a crisis desk was established due to the loss of life and property caused by adverse weather conditions. PRIME MINISTER SANCHEZ: LET’S AVOID UNNECESSARY TRAVEL Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez shared on his social media account, “I am closely and anxiously following the information about missing persons and the damage caused by the heavy rain and storm in the last few hours. All emergency services, civil protection, military emergency response teams, police and civil guards are on duty in the region. Let’s be very careful in the face of the storm and avoid unnecessary travel.” The Royal Palace also said in a statement: “We are following with great concern the devastating consequences of the heavy rain and storm in Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, Andalusia and other parts of Spain. Our sincere wish is for our missing citizens to be found and rescued as soon as possible. We stand in solidarity with the thousands of people affected by this disaster. We would like to thank all emergency services, firefighters, local police, armed forces, national police and civil guards for their commendable work in such difficult conditions.”
