Storm in India: 600,000 people evacuated

Approximately 600,000 people were evacuated in the east of the country due to Tropical Storm Dana, which has negatively affected life in India.

In a statement made by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), it was reported that Tropical Storm Dana was reaching speeds of 120 kilometers per hour in the state of Odisha and West Bengal. Heavy rain and the storm caused trees to be uprooted, created a risk of flooding and the evacuation of approximately 600,000 people. The IMD’s announcement that low-lying areas could be flooded due to a rise in water levels of approximately one meter put authorities on high alert in the region. No loss of life or property has been reported as a result of the storm. Schools were suspended yesterday in Odisha due to the storm, more than 200 train services were cancelled and flights were suspended. Fishermen were warned not to go out to sea. Last year, 523 people lost their lives and $2.5 billion worth of damage was caused by the storms that hit the country.
