Streets in darkness: Gaza has been without electricity for a year

When Israel cut off electricity to the Gaza Strip in the early days of the war, Palestinians were forced to use mobile phones to light the darkness and cook over fires. As the war in Gaza reaches its 400th day, Palestinians are still shrouded in darkness.

There has been a power outage in the Gaza Strip since the war began on October 7, more than a year.
Gazans are forced to make do with alternatives that are far from meeting their basic needs.
Electricity is one of the fundamental building blocks of modern life. Few people in Gaza have access to electricity since Israel cut off electricity in the early days of the war, saying it was an effort to weaken Hamas.
A year of power outages underpins almost every other form of deprivation imposed by the war.

Those who hedged against the outages with generators and solar power are considered lucky.

With the war, Israel is blocking the arrival of new panels. Diesel is also not being brought into the region because Hamas members might use it.

Last week, Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a previous speech, “Humanitarian aid to Gaza? No lights will be turned on, no water will be provided and no fuel tankers will enter the strip until the Israeli hostages return to their homes.” He said.
