Students in Italy protested the education policies of the right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni.
Students took to the squares in many cities across the country to protest the education policies of the Meloni government. The demonstrators carried Palestinian flags to indicate their support for Palestine, which is under Israeli attack. According to reports in the Italian press, clashes occasionally broke out between students and security forces during the demonstration held in the northwestern city of Turin. When the students in Turin wanted to march to the governor’s office, they came face to face with security forces in Castello Square. The police used batons against the students. It was reported that 15 security officers were injured in the incidents. During the march, a group of students entered some “fast food” stores on the grounds that they supported Israel, chanted “Intifada” slogans there and protested these businesses. An effigy of Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara was also burned in the demonstration in Turin. Students in cities such as the capital Rome, Milan, Naples and Bologna also reacted to the education policies of the Meloni government. Meanwhile, a giant Palestinian flag was unfurled in the demonstration in Milan. Prime Minister Meloni stated in a post on his X platform account that “usual people resorted to unacceptable violence” in some squares today, and said, “Some security forces were taken to emergency rooms due to the explosives used and the brawls.
I wish all our injured police officers the best and get well soon. I hope that some politicians will stop protecting or legitimizing this violence and unite in condemning such serious incidents without any doubt.”
