They can talk if they want: Monkeys have the necessary infrastructure for language!

A new study published in the journal PLOS Biology revealed that great apes can distinguish subject-object, which is the basis of language. The study included tests on chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans, as well as humans and babies.

A new discovery that surprised the scientific world revealed that great apes have cognitive mechanisms that form the basis of language.
The study included tests on chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans, as well as humans and babies.
The researchers had 14 humans, 5 chimpanzees, 2 gorillas and 2 orangutans watch short videos. The results showed that the monkeys and adult humans focused largely on the subject-object relationship. The monkeys’ attention was focused on the subject, especially in videos that included food. This shows that great apes understand the difference between the performer of the action and the recipient.
Experts think that this cognitive ability developed before the emergence of language. Vanessa Wilson, lead author of the study from the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, stated that language may be related to social cognition, and that humans’ need for social cooperation may have triggered the development of language.
The reason why monkeys haven’t developed language is still unclear. According to the researchers, this may be due to a lack of sufficient “motivation” or “resources”. There is also debate about whether monkeys’ brain capacities are large enough to support language formation.
“We are discovering that the difference between human communication and that of other species is more a matter of degree than quality,” Wilson says. These findings suggest that humans may not be as unique as once thought and that a deeper understanding of animal communication is needed.
