US elections: First results from iconic village

The first results in the US elections came from a village with 6 voters. The ballot boxes opened in the village of Dixville Notch yielded equal votes for two candidates; Trump received 3 votes and Kamala received 3 votes. While 4 voters in this village were registered to Trump’s party, it was noteworthy that they were lost. Hillary Clinton won in 2016 and Joe Biden won in 2020 in the village. The village has been a favorite of journalists covering the election for many years due to its tradition of opening the ballot boxes at midnight.

There are approximately 170 million voters in the US. Some states have already granted the right to vote before Election Day, so more than 81 million Americans have already cast their votes. In some states, it is possible to vote more than a month in advance.

The first of the ballot boxes was opened in Dixville Notch, a village near New Hampshire. Three votes were cast for Trump and three for Kamala. There were already six voters in the village. Both candidates got an equal number of votes. What makes the result interesting is that four voters in the village were registered with Trump’s party, while two voters were registered as independents.

This unincorporated settlement, located on the northern tip of New Hampshire on the Canadian border, opened and closed its ballot boxes just after midnight (00:00 GMT), a tradition dating back to the 1960s. Four Republicans and two undeclared voters participated in the election.

The traditional voting method in the village has also caused the press to come here for elections for years, because the earliest ballot boxes are opened here.

Dixville Notch voters have supported the Democratic candidate in the last two presidential elections; the town gave President Joe Biden five votes unanimously in 2020, and Hillary Clinton received four of seven votes in 2016; two for Trump and one for candidate Gary Johnson.
