Venezuela announced that $100,000 will be given to information leading to the capture of opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez. Gonzalez had sought asylum in Spain. Meanwhile, there are also claims that Gonzalez will cross over to Argentina and be received by President Javier Milei there.
According to news in the national press, Venezuela announced that a reward will be offered for the capture of Gonzalez, who currently lives in the Spanish capital Madrid. The Venezuelan Scientific, Penal and Criminalistic Investigations Union (CICPC) has pledged to give $100,000 to those who will help detain Gonzalez, who has taken refuge in Spain. The CICPC said, “Gonzalez is wanted on charges of supporting acts of violence against the republic, usurpation of office, forgery of documents, money laundering, disregard for state institutions, disobedience to the law and establishing a criminal organization.”
WILL HE GO TO ARGENTINA? Meanwhile, information has been shared that Gonzalez will travel to Argentina and be received by President Javier Milei. Opposition politician Gonzalez has not yet given an official response to the claims that he will “seek refuge in Argentina.” Gonzalez had previously announced in several statements to the media that he wanted to come to Venezuela on January 10, 2025 to be sworn in as president.
“HE CANNOT COME TO VENEZUELA” Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Diosdado Cabello, in a statement on November 29, 2024, stated that Gonzalez would be detained from the moment he set foot in Venezuela and used the following statement, “There is not a single possibility that Edmundo Gonzalez will come to Venezuela to take the oath.” Emphasizing that President Nicolas Maduro won the July 28 elections, Cabello said that Maduro would be sworn in in front of the National Assembly (AN) on January 10, 2025. MADURO WON FOR THE THIRD TIME According to the results announced by the National Electoral Council on July 29, Nicolas Maduro won the presidential election for the third time with 51.20 percent of the vote. Opposition coalition candidate Gonzalez and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado rejected the election results. Gonzalez and her husband flew from Caracas to Madrid on September 8 on a Spanish Air Force plane after an arrest warrant was issued for her.
