The US National Security Agency (NSA) has made an important security recommendation for Android and iOS users. The agency recommended that mobile devices be turned off and on at least once a week as an effective method of protecting them against cyberattacks.
In its published security guide, the NSA emphasized that many features of smartphones provide convenience for users but also pose security risks.
The guide included simple precautions that users can take against cyberattacks, such as using strong passwords, using biometric verification systems and keeping devices up to date.
However, the most notable recommendation was to regularly turn devices on and off. The NSA stated that this process protects against more complex attacks such as spear phishing. Spear phishing refers to personalized phishing attacks, while “zero-click” attacks allow malicious individuals to install malware on the victim’s device.
The NSA stated that restarting once a week provides protection against such attacks, and emphasized the importance of implementing this method alone is not sufficient and that it should be implemented in conjunction with other security measures.
Turn Off Bluetooth: Turning off Bluetooth when not in use prevents unauthorized connection attempts. Enable Undiscoverable Mode: If you must turn on Bluetooth, put your device in “undiscoverable” mode. This makes it harder for attackers to find your device. Decline Unknown Pairing Requests: Be careful when accepting pairing requests. Always decline requests from an unknown device.

Use Strong and Unique Passwords: Avoid using simple or default passwords. Create strong passwords that include numbers, letters, and special characters. Update Your Software Regularly: Keeping your operating system and applications up to date is important to close security gaps. By following these steps, you can make your device more secure and protect against cyber attacks.
