West Bank under siege: Operation by Israel, masked raid by settlers

A ceasefire has been declared after 15 months of attacks in Gaza. However, this time Israel has turned its arrows towards the West Bank. Israel, which announced that it has launched Operation “Iron Wall” under the claim of fighting terrorism, has caused the deaths of dozens of Palestinians. The raids carried out by Israeli settlers on Palestinian villages have increased tensions in the region. It was revealed that the settlers attacked the villages with masks on their faces and flammable materials in their hands, and Israeli forces confirmed the raid. The ongoing violence in the West Bank and Israel’s “military operation” in Jenin have brought new questions and concerns.

The Israeli army announced yesterday that it had launched a military operation in the Jenin Refugee Camp in the northern West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that the attacks in Jenin aimed to “eliminate terrorism” in the region. The operation was reportedly called the “Iron Wall”.
The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has called on Palestinians in the West Bank to escalate hostilities against Israeli forces in response to the offensive.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that Israeli warplanes hit Jenin and that Israeli forces, including snipers and armored vehicles, surrounded the city’s refugee camp and prevented ambulances from entering. Videos by local journalists showed a large number of armored vehicles, including bulldozers, entering Jenin.
Elise Stefanik, nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), argued that Israel has a “biblical right” in the occupied West Bank. Stefanik did not respond positively to the Palestinians’ right to establish their own state.
Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who opposes the Gaza ceasefire, said that security in the West Bank has been added to the country’s “war goals.” Smotrich had considered leaving the Israeli government over the Gaza ceasefire, but decided to stay in the cabinet after receiving assurances from Netanyahu that Israel would continue its military operations.
Herzi Halevi, the outgoing Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said the army “must be ready for significant operations” in the occupied West Bank.
Recently, around 40 “masked” settlers attacked Palestinian villages in the northern city of Qalqilya. Many Palestinian homes, businesses and vehicles were torched. Residents of the town of Qalqilya reported that a large group of armed settlers set vehicles and shops on fire and threw rocks and petrol bombs at homes in the town.
The international community has been failing to prevent settler violence, which has escalated in recent years and largely goes unpunished.
The IDF made a statement today confirming that dozens of Israeli settlers participated in the raid.

However, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far.
