What happens if we don’t shower for 5 years? The experiment result was surprising

The demand for personal care products is increasing day by day all over the world. Arguing that strong marketing strategies and product variety trap individuals in an endless shopping cycle, Dr. James Hamblin explained that he hadn’t showered for 5 years and as a result of this experiment, he didn’t smell as bad as expected.

Dr. James Hamblin, who was a guest on CNN’s health writer Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s podcast, drew attention with the expressions he used about personal care products. Hamblin said, “When you go to a pharmacy, you definitely see shampoos and soaps next to cold medicines. But how necessary are these products for health? These kinds of sales moves made me think, ‘Am I wasting my money and time?'”
Hamblin, who conducted an interesting experiment by not washing for 5 years, shared his observations in his book Clean, The New Science of Skin, published in 2020.
The expert, who stated that there is a false perception that personal care products promise hygiene and health, suggested that these products have no effect other than feeling good and smelling nice. Hamblin emphasized that soap is useful in dissolving oily and sticky substances, but the washing process is often done with mechanical force, and most of the contaminants are cleaned by rubbing the hands under water.
Dr. James Hamblin claimed that thanks to the marketing techniques of companies, showering every other day has become normal in society, while those who wash at longer intervals are labeled with adjectives such as ‘dirty’ or ‘disgusting’.
“There is a harmony between the oils and chemicals that your skin naturally secretes and the skin microbiome that lives on your skin. When you shower with hot water and use soap, you temporarily disrupt the microbiome,” said Dr. Hamblin, emphasizing that he does not smell bad because he has not showered for 5 years.
