Here is the life of Muhammed Colani, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Muhammad Colani was born in Saudi Arabia in 1982 as the son of a Syrian family in exile. His real name is Ahmed Hussein al-Shara, and his pen name is Abu Muhammed al-Golani. His family was forced to leave their home in the Golan Heights during the war in 1967. For this reason, he uses the pen name Colani. Towards the end of the 1980s, his family returned to Syria. In 2003, he went to Iraq to fight against the US occupation and joined Al-Qaeda. He spent some time in an American prison in Iraq. He emerged in Syria with the outbreak of the civil war in 2011. He founded the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front. This organization later became Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) severed its ties with Al-Qaeda in 2016. In order to gain international legitimacy, the Colani are trying to act more organized and establish proper governance in the regions they have captured. They have promised to protect minorities in the lands under their control.
