Will the US government send troops into space?

NASA’s future director Jared Isaacman suggested that sending US soldiers into space is “absolutely inevitable.” Isaacman said that plans to send more people into space will include some US military soldiers. Stating that if Americans are going to be in low Earth orbit, they will need people to protect them, Isaacman said, “America will lead this, and we will need guards up high watching over us.” The future NASA administrator is not the first person to suggest that US soldiers will be sent into space. Retired Lt. Gen. John Shaw has previously said the Department of Defense will establish command centers off Earth.

Incoming NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said sending U.S. troops into space was “absolutely inevitable” to protect the country’s economic interests.
President-elect Donald Trump nominated the tech billionaire as the next head of the US Space Agency last week, saying he would “lead NASA into a bold new era.”

“If Americans are going to be in low Earth orbit, we’re going to need people to protect them. That’s the path humanity is going to follow. America is going to lead the way, and we’re going to need guardians up high watching over us,” Isaacman said.
Isaacman, 41, previously flew into space on two self-funded commercial missions in SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule.
But he suspended all future travel after he began working for the U.S. government.
One of his goals as NASA’s new head is to help build a space economy that could include mining, manufacturing and energy. Isaacman called on private companies such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin to “crack the code to something that’s outside of what’s been done for a while.”
“Space has unparalleled potential for biotechnology, mining, and new energy sources. It will be a thriving space economy — creating opportunities for countless people to live and work in space. “At NASA, we will pursue these possibilities and begin an era in which humanity becomes a space civilization.” he said.
Isaacman did not specify a timeframe for the first military unit to travel into space, but suggested that it would occur simultaneously with NASA establishing a permanent presence on the Moon as part of the Artemis program.
NASA’s future administrator is not the first person to say that US soldiers will be sent into space. In 2020, retired Lieutenant General John Shaw said that the Department of Defense would establish command centers outside the Earth.
