World leaders in Russia: BRICS Summit meets in Kazan

The leaders of the BRICS countries, which are the world’s leading growing economies, are meeting in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, a part of the Russian Federation. More than 30 countries are expected to be represented at the summit. The expansion of the union, “de-dollarization” in trade and regional conflicts will be the main agenda items of the meetings. President Erdoğan is expected to meet with his Russian counterpart Putin at the summit tomorrow.

Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, affiliated to Russia, is hosting world leaders for the 16th BRICS Summit today.
This year’s BRICS summit, which is being held for the first time in its expanded form, of which Russia holds the rotating presidency for 2024, is of particular importance at a time when Western countries continue to attempt to isolate Russia.
BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and the Republic of South Africa) aims to create an alternative to the West’s economic union.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also expected to attend the summit.
Erdoğan is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow, on the second day of the summit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is among the leaders who will attend the summit upon Putin’s invitation.
Kazan, located on the banks of the Volga River, is also one of Russia’s important political, scientific, educational, cultural and sports centers.
The summit is the first to be held after the BRICS expansion in January, when Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined the group.
The total gross domestic product of the ten-member BRICS organization currently accounts for about a third of the global total.
Their population is almost half of the world’s total, while their trade is one-fifth of the global total.
